It was never going to be an easy task for the host nation’s Mo Zhang as she came up against Korea’s defensive Suh Hyowon and USA’s Lily Zhang in the qualification group stage of the 2017 Uncle Pop Women’s World Cup.

The Korean star led the group stage seedings as the 9th overall seed and indeed proved too much of a challenge for Canada’s Zhang as the match went quickly in favour of the chopper in four straight games. The result meant that, given Lily Zhang’s 4-1 loss to Suh Hyowon, the qualification second place would rely on the colossal match between Lily Zhang of the USA and Mo Zhang of Canada.

On their last encounter it was Lily Zhang of the USA who lifted the Pan Am Cup after a convincing 4-0 win over Mo Zhang, this match would be a test of mental fortitude and form.

It would be Canada’s Zhang who raced ahead, claiming a 2-0 lead. Could the previous result be reversed? Not so, USA’s Zhang would gather herself and come storming back into the match. With a 3-2 lead it was the 21 year old American player who held the balance of the match, just one more game and she would advance to the main draw.

On her home turf and with the goal of doing her absolute best it proved to be a decisive moment for Mo Zhang as she flipped the tables on her opponent and powered home in the match. Winning games 6 and 7, it would be a 4-3 victory for Mo Zhang. On her home ground she advances to the main draw of the 2017 Uncle Pop Women’s World Cup!
